A deed poll is a legal document that proves you've changed your name. It's a type of legal contract that only concerns one person, and is signed by that person in the presence of a witness. You can use a deed poll to change your name on important documents like your passport, driving license, and with your employer. You can also use it to add or remove names and hyphens, or change spelling.
Age
If you are 16 years of age or over unless there are related court orders or legal restrictions against you, or you intend to deceive someone, you can legally change your name.
Nationality
If you are a British citizen and currently live in the UK, then in general, there are no restrictions to change your name by Deed Poll.
Can I change my child's name?
Yes, if all those with parental responsibility for the child concerned, i.e. the mother and or father, consent to the name change.
If you have sole parental responsibility, you do not need anyone else's consent to change your child's name.
